There are so many scenarios that go through your head when deciding how to talk to your aging parents about safe driving and taking the car keys away. When is the right time? How will I approach them about this? What will I say to them? How will they react? Without a doubt, it will be a tough conversation. There are however some simple steps you can take to alleviate stress when talking to your loved one about taking the car keys away.
1) Have a plan in place for transportation. It is always a good idea to know what your plan is before approaching them about the situation. That way they know they will still be able to go places if needed but with a safe driver.
2) Start the conversation early and make it a continued conversation over time. Do not just spring it on them at one time and then take their car keys away.
3) Involve another person to talk to them about safe driving and taking the car keys away. Example: Doctor, therapist, etc.
4) If you are working with someone that has memory loss and the doctor recommends taking the car keys away, think about placing the car out of sight. Keeping the car somewhere else or selling the car. Sometimes out of sight, out of mind is best.
Do not hesitate to speak to someone that can help and talk to your loved one about safe driving and taking car keys away. R
